Chains of Darkness

In the divine decree against the rebellious Watchers, specific instruments of binding and imprisonment are described as the means by which angelic rebellion is contained until the final judgment. In 1 Enoch 10, Raphael binds Azazel and casts him into a pit covered with jagged rocks, while Michael is commanded to bind Semjaza and his associates in valleys of the earth for seventy generations. These chains represent the irrevocable nature of divine sentencing. The imagery of celestial binding recurs throughout the Enochic corpus, particularly in chapters 18-21 where Enoch witnesses imprisoned stars (fallen angels) held in a chaotic region beyond the ordered cosmos. Within the tradition, these chains embody the principle that even the most powerful created beings are subject to divine authority and that rebellion, however spectacular, meets with certain containment.
