Azazel

Portrait of Azazel

In the ancient Enochian accounts of heavenly rebellion, a key figure stands out among the Watchers for accelerating humanity's descent into violence and moral disorder. Described in the Book of Enoch as one of the principal leaders who descended to Mount Hermon, this being's actions form part of the broader narrative in chapters 6 through 16, where the angels' illicit unions with human women produce the giants and introduce knowledge that corrupts the earth. The resulting wickedness prompts direct appeals from the archangels to the Most High, framing this transgression as a pivotal cause of pre-flood chaos rather than a minor infraction. Particular emphasis falls on the specific arts transmitted to humankind, which include the forging of swords, knives, shields, and breastplates for warfare, as well as the preparation of antimony for eye cosmetics, bracelets, ornaments, and the use of precious stones and dyes for beautification. These instructions appear explicitly in 1 Enoch 8:1, where they are credited with fostering bloodshed, vanity, and sorcery that spread rapidly among people. The text positions such revelations as violations of the natural order established at creation, directly contributing to the cry of the earth that reaches heaven in chapter 9 and necessitates intervention. Divine response culminates in a binding decree delivered through the archangel Raphael. The figure is seized, his hands and feet bound, and cast into an opening in the desert, covered with jagged rocks to remain in darkness until the final judgment, as detailed in 1 Enoch 10:4-8. This temporary confinement underscores the Enochian theme of deferred yet certain accountability, distinguishing his fate from immediate destruction while linking his punishment to the restoration of righteousness before the eschaton. Across related apocryphal traditions such as Jubilees 5 and Jasher 4, parallel accounts of the Watchers reinforce the same pattern of forbidden instruction leading to judgment, highlighting how this narrative served early Jewish interpreters as an explanation for the origins of warfare, idolatry, and occult practices persisting into later ages.

A1nd Azâzêl taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them =the metals= ‹of the earth› and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all colouring tinctures.

2 And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways.

Azazel Bound in the Desert

The Book of Enoch 10:4-8

Raphael is commanded to bind Azazel hand and foot, cast him into the darkness of Dudael, and cover him with rough stones until the day of the great judgment.

I4n those days they shall be led off to the abyss of fire: ‹and› to the torment and the prison in which they shall be confined for ever.

5 And whosoever shall be condemned and destroyed will from thenceforth be bound together with them to the end of all generations. 6 And destroy all the spirits of the reprobate, and the children of the Watchers, because they have wronged mankind. 7 Destroy all wrong from the face of the earth, and let every evil work come to an end: and let the plant of righteousness and truth appear: and it shall prove a blessing: the works of righteousness and truth shall be planted in truth and joy for evermore. 8 And then shall all the righteous escape, And shall live till they beget thousands of children, And all the days of their youth and their =old age= shall they complete in peace.
